The sensational discovery of the archaeologists from Russia in Egypt. During excavations in and around Cairo, they found fragments of ancient fortifications. Scientists claim that their discovery was nothing like the legendary “white walls” of Memphis, the first capital of Ancient Egypt, for which researchers from around the world raced for over a hundred years.

As told “MK” the Deputy Director of the egyptologic research Centre of Russian Academy of Sciences Alexey Krol, the finding was discovered in the province of Giza, 20 kilometres from Cairo. Russian archaeologists first came here in 2001, and since then almost every meter of covered ground gives scientists new surprises. Now archaeologists are working on the territory of Kom tuman – one of the hills on which lay the legendary Memphis, built in the early third Millennium BC on the Western Bank of the Nile.

It was there, in the excavation with a total area of over 20 hectares, has uncovered fragments of stone fortifications. On one side they are covered with lime whitewash. This forced the expedition members to assume that they stumbled upon the famous “white” walls that almost from the moment osnovaniia served as protection from the outside world. In favor of this version and the location of the artifact, and: not far from the necropolis of Saqqara, listed as a world heritage site by UNESCO.

“On the opposite (Eastern ed.) the Nile was the burial of the era of the first pharaohs of Egypt, says the head of the expedition Director of the Center for Egypt studies Galina Belova. – Logically, geographically, first capital had to be tied to such a major necropolis”.

It also found the remains of a developed water supply system, drains and wells, and traces of workshops. They, as scientists assume, was made of faience and glassware, as well as sewed clothes for dignitaries and Apria Pharaoh, who ruled in the 6th century BC at the dawn of the power of Ancient Egypt.

According to participants in the excavations, all artifacts found indicate that this was the greatest cultural and economic center of Ancient Egypt for the construction of which ambitious king-founder Mina even commanded to change the channel of the Nile.

The age of the find

However, the exact age of the finds, archaeologists have not yet venture to speak.

As explained by Alexey Krol described in various Chronicles “white walls” belong to the so-called first Memphis. That is, they date from the third Millennium BC. To get to these antiquities, it is necessary to dig at least eight or ten meters deep, breaking the ground waters.

Russian archaeologists working in the upper layers of the land of Egypt, revealing the cultural layers of a maximum of 6 century BC Now historians will explore the whitewashed stones. And the expedition members plan to continue the excavations and to find other parts of white wall-the defenders of the ancient Egyptian capital.
